Five Track & Field, Cross Country Bears Earn Team Awards at Banquet

SPRINGFIELD - Five Missouri State track & field and cross country student-athletes earned individual awards at the team's second annual banquet and alumni reunion celebrating the 2012-13 season Saturday at the University Plaza Hotel.

Senior of the Year honors went to Kimsue Grant, while Pernell Joseph, Althia Maximilien and Shavonne Husbands were tabbed Junior, Sophomore and Freshman of the Year, respectively. Maximilien also earned Track Athlete of the Year, while Grant took Field Athlete of the Year. Emily Beaver claimed Cross Country Athlete of the Year.

Grant was named All-MVC in the long jump and triple jump during the indoor season, while being all-conference in the triple jump, long jump and 4x100-meter and 4x400-meter relays. She made her fourth trip to NCAA championships in her final outdoor campaign.

Maximilien earned the second All-American honor of her career last season, finishing 13th in the 400-meter prelims at the NCAA indoor championships. She also was named All-MVC in the 200 and 400 meters indoors and in the 200, 400, 4x100 and 4x400 outdoors. Joseph was all-conference in the 60 meters indoors and 4x100 outdoors on the year, and Husbands followed in the 100, 200, 4x100 and 4x400 outdoors.

Beaver led the cross country team to a ninth-place finish at last season's Missouri Valley Conference championships last season, posting her best five-kilometer time of the year in the event.

The Bears open their 2013-14 indoor track & field campaign on Dec. 6 with the Holiday Preview, hosted by Iowa State in Ames, Iowa.
