Phillips Honored for Performance in Chile Pepper Festival
Sophomore Terry Phillips (Kansas City, Mo.) has won the Missouri Valley Conference Cross Country Athlete of the Week for the week of Oct. 12. This is the second time that Phillips has won the award this season.
In one of the premier cross country meets in the country, the Chile Pepper Festival in Fayetteville, Ark., Phillips placed 12th overall in a field of 267. Though the race was the first 6K of the season and the course conditions were extremely muddy and sloppy, Phillips still turned in a time of 21:26.09, a new personal best in the 6K distance. Notable teams in the field were nationally-ranked Texas Tech and SMU, who were 20th and 26th respectively entering the meet. Also competing were Midwest Region powerhouses Oklahoma State, who placed fifth in last year's Midwest Regional and University of Missouri, ranked ninth in the Midwest Region entering the race.
The award comes directly before the MVC Conference Championship to be run at Bradley University in Peoria, Ill. on Oct. 31. The meet will start at 11:30 a.m. for the women and 10:30 a.m. for the men. Following the MVC Championship, Missouri State will host the NCAA Midwest Regional at Springfield Underground on Nov. 14. The Regional meet will begin at noon.
