ST. LOUIS - The Missouri State cross country team was picked to finish ninth in the Missouri Valley Conference preseason poll, the league announced on Monday.

The Bears earned 27 points, finishing ahead of Evansville with 22.

"I know we were picked ninth, but that's just what the coaches think," said third-year MSU head coach Alick Musukuma. "It all depends on how our athletes run that will determine our finish at the end of the year."

Two-time defending women's cross country champion Illinois State was chosen to repeat as Valley champion, earning nine first-place votes and 98 points overall. Southern Illinois claimed the remaining first-place vote and 77 points to take third in the voting. League-newcomer Loyola finished second with 87 points.

Missouri State lost three runners from a team which finished ninth in the MVC championships in 2012.
