SPRINGFIELD -- The Missouri State University cross country squad has finalized its 2011 schedule with six meets on the slate. The Bears will be guided by first-year MSU head cross country coach Alick Musukuma, who served in the same capacity at Oral Roberts University from 1998-2009.

To open the 2011 season, the Bears will compete in two events in the metro area including a dual-meet with Evangel University on Sept. 2 and the Richard Clark Invitational (5K) hosted by MSU on Sept. 10.

After opening the season in Springfield, the team will hit the road for the Greater Louisville Cross Country Classic held at E.P. Tom Sawyer State Park on Oct 1. The Bears will then get a taste of Arkansas when they travel to Fayetteville, for the Chile Pepper Festival (6K) on Oct. 15. Last season MSU placed 14th overall out of 56 teams at the invitational, led by Leah Nichols' 13th-place finish.

"We will compete against some high-profile teams at all of these meets, which will help us to prepare for the [Missouri Valley] Conference meet," Musukuma said.

Following the Chile Pepper Festival, the Bears will gear up for the MVC Championships (5K) on Oct. 30. The meet is hosted by Indiana State at the La Vern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course, which is also the site for the 2011 NCAA National Championships (6K) in November.

Last season, the Bears finished third at the MVC Championships behind Wichita State and Illinois State and sent the trio of Terry Phillips, Emily Beaver and Leah Nichols to the NCAA Midwest Regional Championships in Peoria, Ill.
