The Missouri State volleyball team closed out the regular season with a 16-14 overall record and a 10-8 mark in Missouri Valley Conference action to finish sixth in the league standings. The Bears now host the MVC Volleyball Championship Nov. 22-24 at Hammons Student Center and begin with third-seeded Wichita State at 7:30 p.m. Thursday. The winner of that match advances to play No. 2 UNI in the semi-finals on Friday, with the championship match set for 7 p.m. Saturday. The other half of the bracket includes No. 1 Creighton, No. 4 Southern Illinois and No. 5 Illinois State.
Wichita State is 20-8 overall and finished third in the MVC with a 13-5 league record.
The Shockers boast a balanced offensive attack with six players averaging at least 1.99 kills per set, and hit .245 as a team compared to .201 for opponents. WSU averages 13.69 kills, 2.08 blocks, 15.72 digs and 1.28 aces per set. WSU setter Chelsey Feekin hits .451 and has led the nation in that category for much of the season.
Wichita State defeated Missouri State 3-1 in both meetings this season.
Missouri State has appeared in six of the last 11 MVC Tournament finals. MSU is 26-22 in the tournament with titles coming in 1990, 1993, 2005 and 2008.
This week’s MVC Tournament marks the sixth time the event has taken place in Springfield. In previous tournaments, Missouri State claimed the title in 1993, Illinois State won in 1982, 1984 and 1996, and UNI won in 1991 and 2007.
