Missouri State (11-9, 4-2 Missouri Valley Conference) reaches the halfway mark of the MVC season Friday at 7 p.m. with Wichita State paying a visit to Hammons Student Center.
Wichita State is 13-5 overall and 6-2 in league play with the two losses coming at the two front-runners, Creighton and UNI.
The Shockers boast a balanced offensive attack with six players averaging at least 1.80 kills per set, and hit .246 as a team compared to .207 for opponents. WSU averages 13.56 kills, 2.16 blocks, 15.26 digs and 1.37 aces per set. WSU setter Chelsey Feekin leads the nation with a .481 hitting percentage.
Missouri State holds a 43-21 all-time series edge over Wichita State, though WSU has won 15 of the last 22 meetings. Of those 22 matches, exactly half have gone the full five sets.
Last Friday, the Bears won the final two sets for a 3-2 victory over Indiana State. Kaitlin Jaeger led MSU with 18 kills and six players had at least 10 digs, while a pair of Sycamores surpassed the 20-kill mark in the loss.
Saturday, Missouri State found itself down two sets to Illinois State and did its best to replicate its 2011 home match with the Redbirds that resulted in a comeback win, but fell short after failing to convert a trio of match points in a 17-15 fifth-set loss.
Monday, Olivia Brand had 15 kills and the Bears stifled one of the nation’s top statistical offenses in handing Central Arkansas just its second loss in 21 matches in 3-1 fashion.
