Missouri State (9-6, 1-2 Missouri Valley Conference) plays its first home conference matches of the season this weekend when it hosts Evansville (6-9, 1-3) at 7 p.m. Friday and Southern Illinois (7-9, 2-2) at 7 p.m. Saturday at Hammons Student Center.
After playing 11 of their first 15 matches away from Springfield, the Bears will be home for three weekends in October and seven of the nine scheduled matches this month.
Saturday’s match with Southern Illinois will serve as the annual Dig Pink breast cancer awareness event. T-shirts and pink hair extensions will be sold with the proceeds benefitting Breast Cancer Foundation of the Ozarks.
Evansville is 6-9 overall and 1-3 in league matches. Sophomore Ashley Ring is third in the MVC with 3.80 kills per set, and the Purple Aces average 12.00 kills, 0.75 aces, 17.09 digs and 2.25 blocks per set for the season. UE hits .194 as a team and opponents hit .211.
Southern Illinois is 7-9 overall and 2-2 in MVC play with league wins against Indiana State and Loyola and losses to Bradley and Illinois State. The Salukis are led offensively by Jessica Whitehead, who ranks second in the MVC with 4.10 kills per set, and hit .190 as a team compared to .188 for opponents. SIU averages 12.66 kills, 1.10 aces, 14.63 digs and 2.37 blocks per set.
Missouri State leads Evansville by a 36-3 margin, losing just twice since 1999. The Bears lead SIU 46-16 in the all-time series, winning 15 of the last 17 meetings.
