Missouri State (8-3) begins Missouri Valley Conference play Thursday at Wichita State at 6 p.m. and hosts Kansas State Sunday in a 1 p.m. match at Hammons Student Center as the Bears continue their difficult schedule with a pair of 9-1 teams on the slate.
The Shockers are the preseason favorite to win the MVC in 2013, while Kansas State received the 30th-most votes in the AVCA Top 25 poll this week.
Wichita State is 9-1 on the season and the preseason favorite to win the Missouri Valley Conference. The Shockers lead the MVC in hitting percentage at .301 as a team, with three regulars above the .388 mark. As a team, WSU averages 12.88 kills, 12.61 digs, 2.85 blocks and 1.18 aces per set while holding opponents to .157 hitting.
Kansas State is also 9-1 on the year and received the No. 30 vote total in this week’s AVCA Top 25 poll. The Wildcats won at Cal in their last match and are 4-0 in five-set matches this season. KSU will play Arkansas, Saint Louis and South Alabama in Fayetteville prior to coming to Springfield. As a team, the Wildcats hit .203 compared to .166 for the opposition and average 12.62 kills, 1.10 aces, 14.60 digs and 2.58 blocks per set.
Missouri State holds a 43-24 all-time series edge over Wichita State, though WSU has won 18 of the last 25 meetings. Of those 25 matches, 11 have gone the full five sets.
The Bears lead the series with Kansas State by a 15-7 margin. The Wildcats have won the last five match-ups, including a 3-0 win in Manhattan last year and a 3-2 victory in Springfield in 2011.
