Volleyball sweeps UMKC in home opener
The Missouri State volleyball team opened the home portion of the 2006 season with a 3-0 win Friday over Missouri-Kansas City in the T.J. Sales/Dr. Mary Jo Wynn Invitational held at Hammons Student Center. Scores in favor of the Bears were 30-15, 30-11 and 32-30.
Senior Erin O’Connor once again paced the MSU attack, recording a double-double with 16 kills on 28 swings with no errors to go along with 11 digs. Freshman Shanda Harper joined O’Connor in double figures with 11 kills and a team-high four blocks. Katelyn Panzau ran the offense efficiently with 38 assists and five kills.
The Bears hit a season-high .410 for the match, committing just eight attack errors in three games. UMKC was limited to a .061 hitting percentage.
Missouri State dominated through the first two games, holding UMKC to a combined -.083 attack percentage while taking a 2-0 lead. The Bears hit an exceptional .538 in a game two rout.
The Kangaroos would not go away, however, leading as late as 28-27 in the third game before the Bears rallied to the 32-30 win with an emphatic block by O’Connor and Sarah Lansing to seal the victory for Missouri State, which improved to 3-1 with the win.
The long game three allowed for O’Connor and Panzau to accumulate some impressive numbers. O’Connor put away eight balls on 16 swings, and Panzau added 16 assists.
Missouri State extended its win streak for the tournament to 23 matches.
The tournament concludes Saturday with Missouri State playing Northwestern State at 1 p.m. and Arkansas State at 7 p.m. ASU plays UMKC at 10 a.m. and NSU plays UMKC at 5 p.m. to round out the day’s action.
