The Missouri State volleyball team begins the 2013 season with four matches over Labor Day Weekend in Dayton, Ohio and DeKalb, Ill. The Bears’ first three contests take place August 30 and 31 at the Dayton Invitational, with a 3 p.m. Friday opener against Northeastern and Saturday matches against Tulsa at 9 a.m. and 22nd-ranked Dayton at 7 p.m. Missouri State will make its way to Northern Illinois after that for a 2 p.m. Labor Day match against the Huskies.
All four of MSU’s opening-weekend opponents won at least 20 matches last season, combining for a 94-37 record with Tulsa and Dayton making the NCAA Tournament.
Northeastern went 20-7 last season and 9-3 in the Colonial Athletic Association. The Huskies are picked to finish second in that league this season and are led by reigning CAA Player of the Year Kelly Bacon, who tallied 346 kills last year.
Tulsa is picked to finish second in Conference USA this year after three consecutive league championships. The Golden Hurricane went 26-10 last year and played in the NCAA Tournament. TU is paced by senior outside hitter Kellie Culbertson, a two-time all-C-USA pick who averaged 3.42 kills and 2.59 digs per set last year.
Dayton is ranked 22nd in the preseason AVCA Coaches Poll and is the unanimous choice to win a fifth consecutive Atlantic 10 championship. The Flyers went 27-5 in 2012 and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. UD returns four starters and 10 letterwinners from that team.
Northern Illinois is picked to finish second Mid-American Conference’s West Division after going 21-15 last season. NIU returns all-MAC middle blocker Sarah Angelos and outside hitter MacKenzie Roddy, who led the team with 3.90 points per set in 2012.
The Bears are 2-0 all-time against Northeastern, sweeping the Huskies in 2000 and 2011.
Missouri State holds a 17-2 series lead over Tulsa, including 16 consecutive wins in the series prior to the Golden Hurricane’s victory in the second match of the 2012 season.
Dayton leads MSU 2-1, winning in 2005 and 2012 in the only two meetings over the last three decades.
The Bears trail Northern Illinois 3-1, most recently a 3-2 loss in Springfield last year. Prior to that, the schools had not met since 1992.
