MVC Preseason Poll

St. LOUIS, Mo.
--  The Missouri State volleyball team has been picked to finish fourth in the Missouri Valley Conference this season according to a vote of the league’s coaches. Four teams received at least one first-place vote in the poll released Thursday (Aug. 21), while senior outside hitter Olivia Brand also represents the Bears on the six-player all-conference team.

The Bears totaled 68 points in the poll, while four other teams received at least one first-place vote. Wichita State is the favorite with four first-place votes and 87 points, followed by UNI with 85 points and a pair of No. 1 votes. Illinois State sits third with 78 points and a trio of first-place nods.

Southern Illinois picked up the final No. 1 vote and earned 67 points to sit just behind the Bears in fifth, while Loyola grabbed 62 points to round out the six teams expected to make the league tournament held in Cedar Falls, Iowa, Nov. 27-29. Bradley (35), Evansville (29), Indiana State (28) and Drake (11) complete the poll.

Brand has averaged between 2.61 and 2.67 kills per set in each of her three seasons at MSU and was a second-team all-Valley pick last season. She is on pace to become the 19th player in school history to accumulate 1,000 career kills - entering her senior season with 759 - and has at least 10 kills in 32 career matches with a .205 attack efficiency as a Bear.

The Bears make their 2014 debut on Aug. 22 at 7 p.m. with the annual Maroon and White Scrimmage taking place at Hammons Student Center. The scrimmage is free and open to the public. The regular season begins Aug. 29 against New Mexico State in Salt Lake City.

In addition to Brand and her preseason all-MVC selection, the Bears return previous all-league selections in senior Andrea Beaty and sophomore Simone House, as well as a large cast of talented letterwinners and a highly-touted freshman class. Missouri State has posted at least 20 wins in 14 of the last 15 seasons and qualified for seven NCAA Tournaments since 2003.
