Three Bears Receive USTFCCCA All-Academic Team Honors
Asher Kyger, Yaneika Malcolm and Terry Phillips were the three Missouri State track and field athletes to be named to the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) All-Academic team on Monday.
Kyger, a senior for the Bears, broke the school record in the indoor mile run twice this season with her best time of 4:48.67. She was also part of the school record setting distance medley relay team that scored a time of 11:24.02, an NCAA Provisional time. This season, Kyger was MVC indoor champion in the distance medley relay, All-MVC in the mile run and was named to the MVC Scholar-Athlete team.
Malcolm was also a member of the distance medley relay team that set the school record and an NCAA Provisional time of 11:24.02. She was an outdoor conference champion in the 4x400-meter relay, an All-Conference selection in the event, both indoor and outdoor, and All-MVC outdoor for the 400-meter dash. Malcolm was named to the MVC Scholar-Athlete team as well.
Phillips represented Missouri State at the NCAA Outdoor Championship in Fayetteville, Ark., in June, finishing 20th in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. She obliterated the school record in the event twice this season, ultimately running a 10:19.45, besting Erin Sutton’s mark by nearly eight seconds. Phillips was an All-MVC selection for the mile run and 5,000-meter run indoor and the 3,000-meter steeplechase outdoor. She also was named to the MVC Scholar-Athlete squad.
To qualify for the USTFCCCA All-Academic Track and Field Team, the student-athlete must have compiled a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.25 and have met either the NCAA Division I Indoor automatic or provisional qualifying standard or the NCAA Division I Outdoor regional or national qualifying standard in their respective event.
