May 16, 2012
ST. LOUIS -- Missouri State track and cross country standout Emily Beaver (Diamond, Mo.) is among 10 student-athletes named by Commissioner Doug Elgin this week as a Missouri Valley Conference State Farm Good Neighbor Award honoree for the 2012 spring season. The award was created in 2007 to honor the achievements of exceptional student-athletes across the MVC. In order to be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be in good academic standing, must demonstrate good citizenship through good sportsmanship and significant community service, and must participate in a sport, during the season of recognition. The Valley recognizes 10 student-athletes three times annually (fall, winter, spring), for a total of 30 honorees each year. Beaver finished 8th at the 2011 MVC Cross Country Championship and earned the MVC Elite 18 Award for that event. She earned All-MVC honors in 2011 and has been on the MVC Scholar-Athlete team in cross country the last two seasons and in track for the 2011 season. At the 2012 MVC Outdoor Championships, she took fourth in the 1,500-meter run and 8th in the 800-meter run after an All-MVC performance during the indoor season, highlighted by a second-place showing in the Mile Run and 7th-place finish in the 3,000-meter run. She holds a 4.00 grade point average in English education, has been a perennial fixture on the MSU Dean's List and has been named to the MSU Athletic Director's Honor Roll six times. Beaver has also participated in a variety of community service initiatives, including the MVC Just Read program, Adopt-a-Street program, Champion Athletes of the Ozarks Field Day, and Springfield Habitat for Humanity projects.
