The Missouri State track & field team has been chosen to finish fourth in the 2014 Missouri Valley Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships, according to a pre-championship poll released on Tuesday.

The Bears earned 54 points in the voting done by the league’s nine women’s head coaches. Missouri State settled two points in back of meet-host Southern Illinois (56 points).

Indiana State looks to repeat as outdoor champion this week and earned seven first-place votes and 79 points overall to top the poll. Wichita State sits second with the remaining two first-place votes and 71 points.

Northern Iowa (42 points), Illinois State (38). Loyola (35), Bradley (16) and Drake (14) round out the voting.

The Bears are shooting for their first MVC outdoor crown since winning three consecutive titles from 2001-03. MSU enters the meet leading the conference in four individual events and one relay.

Sophomore Robiann Broomfield has posted the top distance in the league in both the long jump and triple jump. Broomfield achieved both marks at the Missouri Relays on April 11, jumping 5.94 meters (19 feet, six inches) in the long jump and 12.83 meters (42 feet, 1.25 inches) in the triple jump.

Junior Althia Maximilien lowered her season-best and conference-leading 400-meter dash time to 53.48 at the Jace LaCoste Invitational on May 3, while sophomore Oarabile Babolayi leads the conference in the 400-meter hurdles. She ran a time of 59.36 at the Drake Relays on April 25.



Babolayi, sophomores Shavonne Husbands, Chelsie Horton and Maximilien also turned in the conference’s top time of the season in the 4x400-meter relay. The quartet ran 3:39.47 at the Jace LaCoste Invitational at Mississippi.

The 2014 MVC Outdoor Track & Field Championships are set for the Lew Hartzog Track & Field Complex in Carbondale, Ill., May 16-18.
