Bears Track and Field Picked Fourth in Pre-Championship Poll
The Missouri Valley Conference announced its Outdoor Track and Field Pre-Championship poll today. The Missouri State team was picked to finish fourth in this week’s State Farm MVC Outdoor Championships.
The Bears amassed 42 points in the poll behind Wichita State, Southern Illinois and Indiana State. Wichita State received five first-place votes and 61 points as the favorite this week. Southern Illinois received the three remaining first-place votes and totaled 58 points as the chosen runner-up. Indiana State received 47 points to edge out the Bears for third in the poll. Illinois State (30 points), UNI (25), Drake (17) and Bradley (8) round out the poll.
Leander Ernest, Yaneika Malcolm and Renna Berry return as outdoor champions for the Bears. Ernest won the 400-meter dash and all three were part of the conference winning 4x400-meter relay in 2008. In addition to Ernest, Malcolm and Berry, Mareneika Goffe, Terry Phillips and Jamie Vest return as All-MVC performers from last season.
The Bears enter the conference meet having already attained NCAA Regional marks in four events. Terry Phillips and Jamie Vest have NCAA Qualifying standards in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. Leander Ernest has reached the mark in the 800-meter run, while Pasca Cheruiyot attained her mark in the 5,000-meter run. The 4x400-meter relay team has also reached the Regional mark this season.
Indiana State will host the three-day State Farm MVC Outdoor Championships beginning Friday at 12:00 p.m. at Marks Field.
