MSU Track and Field Competes at Drake Relays and Kip Janvrin Open
The Missouri State track and field team competed at Simpson College's Kip Janvrin Open in Indianola, Iowa, Friday and the Drake Relays in Des Moines, Iowa. Freshman Auvia Miller earned her first collegiate win at the Kip Janvrin Open in the 5,000-meter run in a time of 17:45.89. MSU senior Kim Carter was a top-finisher for the Bears at the Kip Janvrin Open with a third-place showing in the 100-meter dash in 12.72. In the 200-meter dash, Missouri State placed four athletes in the top five. Tanya Cyrus led the pack with a runner-up finish in a season-best time of 25.02. Her time also surpasses the NCAA provision mark of 25.29. Carter placed third in the event in 25.46, Yaneika Malcolm finished fourth in 25.53 and Alexandria Oembler came in fifth in a time of 25.67. Lauren Nystrom placed fifth for the Bears in the 1,500-meter run in a personal-best time of 4:45.31 and Kristin Wolkey added an eighth-place finish in the 3,000-meter steeplechase in a season-best time of 11:37.26. At the University of Drake Relays, Genna Williams ran a time of 11.73 in the 100-meter dash preliminaries to place third and crossed the line at 11.69 in the final competition to earn fourth. Freshman Leander Ernest continues to improve her time in the 800-meter run, finishing fifth in a personal-best time of 2:07.50. Jamie Vest placed 13th for the Bears in the 3,000-meter steeplechase in a finals time of 10:52.69. Distance specialist Carrie Vestal ran a time of 17:31.44 in the 5,000-meter run to place 23rd. The Bears' 4x400-meter relay team of Angelique Stephens, Cyrus, Malcolm and Ernest surpassed the NCAA regional qualifying mark of 3:43.20 to place 10th at the Drake Relays in a time of 3:40.67. Wolkey, Chloe Key, Nystrom and Carrie Vestal teamed up for an eighth-place finish in the 4x1,600-meter relay in a time of 20:50.04. Up next for the Bears is the Missouri Valley Conference Outdoor Championship hosted by Drake University. The meet begins on Friday, May 11 and will conclude on Sunday, May 13.
