April 18, 2013
The Missouri State track and field team will head to the Ole Miss Open in Oxford, Miss. this weekend. The one-day meet is scheduled to begin on April 20 at 9 a.m. at the Ole Miss Track & Field Complex.
The Bears will be joined at the meet by teams highlighted by Mississippi, Arkansas State, Louisiana-Monroe and Murray State.
The Bears are ranked 15th in the Midwest region this week by the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association. They'll compete on Saturday with six student-athletes who are also regionally ranked by the USTFCCCA.
Freshman Robiann Broomfield vaulted into the regional rankings with her personal-best triple jump performance at last weekend's K.T. Woodman Classic in Wichita, Kan. Broomfield notched a new best distance of 12.45 meters in the event, which leads the Missouri Valley Conference and is the second-best distance in the Midwest.
Senior Kimsue Grant is just a hair behind Broomfield in the triple jump. The 2012 NCAA Outdoor All-American posted a distance of 12.44 meters in Wichita to rank third in the Midwest. Grant also ranks fourth in the long jump with a mark of 6.21 meters.
Grant was part of Missouri State's 4x100-meter relay squad at the K.T. Woodman Classic that crossed the finish line in 46.08 seconds, good for the seventh-best time in the Midwest. Grant was joined on the squad by Pernell Joseph, Shavonne Husbands and Althia Maximilien.
Husbands and Maximilien are also ranked in individual events. Husbands, a freshman, owns the Midwest's seventh-best time (23.93) in the 200-meter dash, while Maximilien, a sophomore, is ranked sixth in the 400-meter dash (54.26).
Freshman Oarabile Babolayi rounds out the MSU list by ranking eighth in the 400-meter hurdles (1:00.05).
