Track and Field Bears Ready for Round Two of the Outdoor Season
SPRINGFIELD - The Joey Haines Invitational awaits the Bears this Friday and Saturday in Cape Girardeau, Mo., as coach Ronald Boyce and his track and field team gear up for their second outing of this outdoor season. The Bears will compete in a field of 11, which includes MVC rival Southern Illinois and host school SEMO. All eyes will be on a young field group that continues to improve. Freshmen Cheyenne Stewart (Christ Church, Barbados) and Kimsue Grant (Arlington, Va.) and sophomore Jeláni Kelly (St. Louis, Mo.) combined for four top-three finishes at last weekend's Razorback Spring Invitational. Stewart took home the high jump title with a Missouri State career best 5-05.00 mark. Shantel Llewellyn (Jr., Ajax, Ontario) and Jodiann Walker (So., Montego Bay, Jamaica) will lead the sprint group. The duo finished second and fifth, respectively, in last weekend's 100-meter dash. Walker won the 60-meter dash at this year's MVC Indoor Championships. All-MVC performer Staci Nelson is the one to watch in the distance events. She finished second in the 1,500-meter run last weekend and is a threat in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. The Bears won three events at last year's invitational, including the 4x400-meter relay that features two returning members in Corteneé Boulard (Sr., Beaumont, Texas) and Rashida Allen (Jr., Montego Bay, Jamaica). The hammer throw is the only event scheduled for Friday, April 2, and will commence at 3:30 p.m. Saturday's heavy slate will begin at 10 a.m. with the long jump.
