The Missouri State track and field team will open its second meet of the outdoor season on Saturday (March 23) at the Mississippi State Conference Challenge in Starkville, Miss. The Challenge is slated for an 11 a.m. start on Saturday at the W.O. Spencer Stadium/Carl Maddox Track.
Missouri State will send its best sprinters to the meet, as school record holders Pernell Joseph and Shavonne Husbands will run the 100-meter dash. Joseph and Husbands will also compete in the 4x100-meter relay, while Husbands' third event will be the 200-meter dash.
Earlier this year, Joseph broke the MSU indoor record in the 60-meter dash (7.48) on Feb. 23 at the Missouri Valley Conference Championships, while Husbands tied an indoor school mark in the 200 meters (23.97) on Feb. 9 at the Tyson Invitational.
Althia Maximilien, a 2013 Indoor All-American, will race the 400-meter dash and be joined in the event by freshman Chelsie Horton.
In distance events, MSU will be represented by Cindy Forde, Nicole Thate and Tenaly Smith in the 800-meter run. Emily Beaver will compete in the 1,500-meter run, while Lisa Imgrund is slated to run the 3,000-meter steeplechase.

Missouri State in the National Ranks
Missouri State's Althia Maximilien and Kimsue Grant cracked the USTFCCCA outdoor preseason national rankings, which were announced Tuesday (March 18). Maximilien ranks 21st in the 400-meter dash with her qualifying time of 53.07 seconds, set on June 9 at the NCAA Outdoor Championships.
Grant is ranked 13th nationally in the long jump with her personal-best distance of 6.33 meters, set at the Missouri Valley Conference Outdoor Championships last season. Grant also earned a No. 15 ranking in the triple jump with another personal best from last season's MVC meet at 13.00 meters.
The Bears also earned a national ranking in the 4x100-meter relay. The squad consisting of Pernell Joseph, Merica Moncherry, Grant and Maximilien out-raced the field in 44.90 seconds at last year's MVC Outdoor Championships. That time is ranked 28th nationally.
