Track and Field and Cross Country Bears Add Four Newcomers

The Missouri State track and field and cross country squad will add four new Bears to their 2012-13 rosters. Director of track and field and cross country Ron Boyce and head cross country coach Alick Musukuma announced the newcomers Wednesday (Feb. 1).
"I am very excited about these recruits", said Musukuma, "They are coming at the right time when we are hosting the Midwest Cross Country Regionals, and we need every athlete that can contribute to the program especially those who will appreciate being here at Missouri State University."
Taeler Marshall, Cross Country/Distance - Hargrove High, Texas
Marshall is a four-time state qualifier for the Lady Falcons cross country squad under head cross country and distance coach Kris Gilmore. She was a first-team all-state selection in 2009, after finishing second in the 3,200-meter run at state. Marshall was also a third-team all-state selection in 2008 and 2011. The Huffman-Hargrove High standout finished fourth at the cross country regional meet her freshman season, second her sophomore season, only to win the meet the past two seasons. In track and field, Marshall competed in the 3,200-meter run at the state championships, finishing second and third in 2010 and 2011, respectively. She is a three-time track and field regional qualifier in both the 3,200- and 1,600-meter runs. In 2010, Marshall won both the 3,200- and 1,600-meter runs at the regional meet. In 2011, she won the 3,200-meter run and finished second in the 1,600-meter run. Marshall also finished third in the 3,200-meter run at the 2009 regional meet.
Mackenzie Weis, Cross Country/Distance - Cass Midway High, Missouri
Weis was the only Missouri Class 1 runner to be announced as a selection for the 2011 Momilesplit.com's cross country team, making the third-team. A two-time Class 1 cross country state champion and a four-time district champion under head cross country coach Doug Carder, Weis was named to the all-state cross country squad all four seasons. She was runner-up at the 2009 state meet and sixth at the 2008 meet. Weis has only lost two meets in her past three cross country seasons at Midway. In 2010, Weis set the Class 1 state cross country meet record. She was a three-time GKCCCCA All-Metro First-Team selection, making honorable mention in her freshman season, and a KC Star All-Metro Cross Country Honorable Mention. Weis is also a two-time state track and field champion in the 3,200-meter run and finished third in her freshman year. She set the Class 1 state meet record in the 3,200-meter run and conference records in the 1,600-meter run and the 3,200-meter run during her sophomore season. She was an Class 1 All-State Track and Field selection in her previous three seasons, and finished first in every meet she competed in during her sophomore and junior seasons.
Tenaly Smith, Cross Country/Distance- Vallivue High, Idaho
Smith is a four-time cross country state qualifier in the 5,000-meter run. In 2009 she finished 22nd and in 2010 she finished 24th. Smith also competed in the Nike Cross Nationals and finished 13th in the 5,000-meter varsity girls' run. Smith is a three-time state qualifier in the 800-meter run in track and field. During the 2011 track and field season, she finished fifth in the 800-meter run at districts, only to go on to finish third at the state meet. In 2010, Smith finished third in the 800-meter run and was a member of the Vallivue High 4x800-meter relay squad that also finished third in districts. At the 2010 state competition, she finished fourth. Smith also qualified for state in the 800-meter run in 2009.
Chelsie Horton, Sprints/Hurdles - Fountain-Fort Carson High, Colorado
Horton was a 200-meter dash state champion her junior season. She was also a state champion in the 400-meter dash and 4x200-meter relay in her sophomore season. Also a medley relay state champion her freshman year, Horton recently won the 200-meter dash at the Joe Davies Open and Fort Collins Track Club Indoor Invitational. She had an outstanding performance last season at the Colorado Springs Metro Meet, taking home first in the 200-meter dash and second in the 100-meter dash and 400-meter dash. Horton has competed in the Colorado USATF Junior Olympic Championships and USATF Region X Championships in 2010. At the Colorado USATF Junior Olympic Championships, Horton won the 400-meter hurdles, took second in the 400-meter dash and finished fourth in the 200-meter dash. At the USATF Region X Championships, she finished second in the 400-meter dash and third in the 400-meter hurdles. Horton has been to the Colorado State Championships the previous two seasons in multiple sprint and hurdle events.
