Track and Field Bears Hurry to Hoosier State for Indiana Relays
The track and field Bears hope to beat the Springfield snow, and the competition, as they travel east to Bloomington, Ind., for the Indiana Relays and its talented field. "The competition will be good," head coach Ronald Boyce said. "I am hoping this weekend our girls can step up and take the challenge on well and show that we do belong in such an arena." The two-day meet will host 22 schools, with the majority of the events taking place Friday, Jan. 29, and event finals concluding early Saturday. Two Bears look to extend their winning streaks at the meet, in senior Mareneika Goffe (Montego Bay, Jamaica) and sophomore Terry Phillips (Kansas City, Mo.). A high jump win for Goffe would be her third-straight of the season. She had three career wins in the event entering this year. Phillips is undefeated this season after placing first in both the mile and 3,000-meter runs at the Mega Meet. Her 4:55.41 mile time is the top 2010 mark in the MVC. Goffe, Phillips and the rest of Coach Boyce's squad are fresh off their impressive performance at the EIU Mega Meet last weekend, where the team accumulated 25 top-five finishes and nine events win. The distance group had a great day, winning all four events in which they competed, while Jeláni Kelly (So., St. Louis, Mo.) set a personal best in the weight throw for the second-straight week. Leneice Rolle (Jr., Nassau, Bahamas) and the 60-meter hurdles will be the first event Friday, taking off at 2 p.m. central. Live stats will be available throughout the weekend at Indiana Relays.
