Track and Field Bears to Ring in New Year at Missouri Invitational
SPRINGFIELD - The track and field Bears will resume their indoor season and start their 2011 schedule with an in-state meet Friday, Jan. 7, at the Missouri Invitational. It will be the Bears first time on the track since their Dec. 4 meet. The Bears will be one of 10 squads competing in Columbia, Mo., this weekend. The field events will start the day at noon, while the track events are set to take off at 1 p.m. Junior Jeláni Kelly and her teammates look to build on their impressive indoor season debuts at the Bob Timmons Challenge Meet. Kelly set a school record in the weight throw (55-05.00) to take home first place. The St. Louis, Mo., native also won the shot put with a throw of 45-05.75, beating her closest competition by more than four feet. Kimsue Grant and Ariel Butzine also produced events wins for the Bears, who finished with 15 top-five finishes. Grant took the top spot in the triple jump with an indoor personal best, 39-11.25. Butzine won a thrilling 600-yard run in her first collegiate indoor meet. Her 1:24.69 time nipped the second-place finisher by .01 seconds.
