FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The Missouri State track & field team closed the final day of the 2014 NCAA West Preliminary with a bang Saturday, as the Bears’ 4x100-meter relay team turned in the third best time in school history to grab the final qualifying spot for the NCAA championships in Eugene, Ore.

The MSU squad of junior Chelsey Borders, senior Pernell Joseph, junior Althia Maximilien and sophomore Shavonne Husbands ran an electric 44.79 to finish fourth in the final preliminary heat of the event and 12th overall to punch a ticket to Oregon.

The Bears came into the meet with the 19th best time of 24 accepted entries at 45.21, set in winning the MVC title on May 18 in Carbondale, Ill. They shattered that mark, despite just missing out on the final automatic qualification spot, which was earned by Cal State Northridge.

The Matadors placed third in the final heat in a time of 44.72, meaning that for Missouri State to get into the NCAA championship field, it would need to do so on time. The Bears, though, did just that, claiming the final spot by four one-hundredths of a second over 13th-place Arizona.

Texas A&M won Missouri State’s heat in a blistering 43.00 to earn the top qualifying time for the 4x100 semifinals, which are slated for Wednesday, June 11 at 4:15 p.m., PDT.

The Bears’ time topped Joseph, Merica Moncherry, Kimsue Grant and Maximilien’s mark of 44.90 from the 2012 MVC championships to enter the top three in school history. The school record – set by Trudi Garrett, Michelle Baptiste, Verneta Lesforis and Wendy Blocker in 1997 – stands at 44.36.

The sprint relay quartet will join sophomore Robiann Broomfield at NCAA championships. Broomfield qualified 10th overall for the triple jump on Friday with a top leap of 12.72 meters (41 feet, 8.75 inches).

The MSU 4x400-meter relay team of sophomore Oarabile Babolayi, Husbands, Maximilien and freshman Rosalie Pringle finished the meet with a time of 3:47.44 to finish 24th overall.
