AUSTIN, Texas -- Missouri State triple jumper Kimsue Grant (Jr., Arlington, Va.) has advanced to the NCAA Division I national semifinals in Des Moines, Iowa after finishing 10th in the preliminary round in Austin, Texas on Saturday. Her top jump of 41 feet, 10.5 inches was her second-best effort of the season and placed her in the elite group of 12 from the Austin site to advance.
Grant will be joined by Althia Maximilien (Fr., Bridgetown, Barbados) as the Bears' representatives in DesMoines this week. Maximilien moved on to the semifinals in the 400-meter dash with an effort of 53.38 on Friday.
Missouri State's final day in Austin on Saturday began with a 15th-place showing by the 4x100-meter relay team. The quartet of Pernell Joseph (So., Vieux Fort, St. Lucia), Merica Moncherry (Fr., Micoud, St. Lucia), Grant and Althia Maximilien (Fr., Bridgetown, Barbados) were fifth in their heat and finished just outside the top 12 which advanced to next week's national semifinals in Des Moines, Iowa. The Bears' time was its third-best 4x100 mark of the season, but considerably slower than the winning 44.90 it turned it at the MVC Outdoor Championships.
Moncherry also competed in the quarterfinal round of the 200-meter dash and finished 8th out of 9 in the third heat. Her time of 24.12 was 22nd in the field of 27 quarterfinalists, which was not good enough to advance to the national semifinals.
Missouri State freshman Althia Maximilien (Bridgetown, Barbados) has moved on to the national semifinals in the 400-meter dash with a third-place effort in her quarterfinal heat here Friday evening at the NCAA Division I Track & Field Championships. Maximilienn registered a 53.38 time in the quarterfinals, her second-fastest mark of the season, to rank ninth among the 27 quarterfinalists.
She will advance to the three-heat national semifinals in Des Moines, Iowa on Wednesday, June 6 at 7 p.m. The top two finishers in each heat in Des Moines, plus the next two fastest times, advance to the national finals on June 8.
Also Friday, fellow MSU freshman Merica Moncherry (Micoud, St. Lucia) moved on to the quarterfinals in the 200-meter dash with a time of 24.10. Out of 47 competitors, her time ranks 22nd headed into Saturday's second round, which begins at 7:50 p.m. Moncherry out-sprinted teammate Pernell Joseph (So., Vieux Fort, St. Lucia), the 2012 MVC outdoor champion in the event. Joseph turned in a 24.58 which was not good enough to advance and placed her 40th in the field.
Senior discus specialist Jelani Kelly (St. Louis, Mo.) also competed in Austin on Friday and turned in a top throw of 158-feet, 3 inches to place 31st in the field of 47. The top 12 finishers in each field event move on to Des Moines.
The NCAA first and second rounds in Austin conclude on Saturday with MSU competing in three events: Moncherry in the 200-meter dash quarterfinals at 7:50 p.m., Kimsue Grant (Jr., Arlington, Va.) in the triple jump at 6:30 p.m., and the 4x100-meter relay team at 6:15 p.m. Grant ranks 21st nationally in the long jump, while the MSU 4x100 team ranks 24th.
Three Missouri State track athletes saw action Thursday at the NCAA Division I Championships opening round here with one participant advancing to the quarterfinals.
Freshman Althia Maximilien (Bridgetown, Barbados) finished second in the fifth heat of the 400-meter dash and posted the 12th-fasted time of the first round to move on to Friday's quarterfinals. Her time of 54.08 was her third fastest of the season. The 400-meter field in Austin included 48 qualifiers, 27 of which advanced to the quarterfinals, which run at 6:15 p.m. Friday. The top three finishers in each of the three quarterfinal heats, plus the next three fastest times advance to next week's national semifinals in Des Moines, Iowa.
The Bears also had competitors in the 100-meter dash and long jump events on Friday. Sophomore Pernell Joseph (Vieux Fort, St. Lucia) ran a time of 11.71 to finish sixth in heat 4. Her time was 34th in the field of 47 runners and was her third-best of the season. Long jumper Kimsue Grant (Jr., Arlington, Va.) was 13th in the long jump with a long effort of 20-feet, 6.5 inches. That effort was her second best of the year, but was 13th in Austin, just one spot shy of advancing to Des Moines.
