AUSTIN, Texas -- Three Missouri State track athletes saw action Thursday at the NCAA Division I Championships opening round here with one participant advancing to the quarterfinals.
Freshman Althia Maximilien (Bridgetown, Barbados) finished second in the fifth heat of the 400-meter dash and posted the 12th-fasted time of the first round to move on to Friday's quarterfinals. Her time of 54.08 was her third fastest of the season. The 400-meter field in Austin included 48 qualifiers, 27 of which advanced to the quarterfinals, which run at 6:15 p.m. Friday. The top three finishers in each of the three quarterfinal heats, plus the next three fastest times advance to next week's national semifinals in Des Moines, Iowa.
The Bears also had competitors in the 100-meter dash and long jump events on Friday. Sophomore Pernell Joseph (Vieux Fort, St. Lucia) ran a time of 11.71 to finish sixth in heat 4. Her time was 34th in the field of 47 runners and was her third-best of the season. Long jumper Kimsue Grant (Jr., Arlington, Va.) was 13th in the long jump with a long effort of 20-feet, 6.5 inches. That effort was her second best of the year, but was 13th in Austin, just one spot shy of advancing to Des Moines.
The NCAA first round meet continues Friday with Joseph and Merica Moncherry (Fr., Micoud, St. Lucia) competing in the 200-meter dash opening round at 8:25 p.m. Discus thrower Jelani Kelly (Sr., St. Louis, Mo.) competes at 11 a.m., and Maximilien will compete in the 400-meter quarterfinals at 6:15 p.m.
