Track & Field Bears Finish Fourth at MVC Indoor Championships

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – Althia Maximilien, Kimsue Grant and Pernell Joseph claimed All-MVC honors for the Missouri State track and field team here on Sunday (Feb. 24), and the Bears claimed fourth place (88 points) at the Missouri Valley Conference Indoor Championships.

Grant took home the triple jump gold with a personal-best mark of 12.66 meters, a figure that currently ranks as the 26th-best distance among Division I student-athletes. Freshmen Robiann Broomfield and Me’Kayla Canady-McGee also earned personal bests in the triple jump with distances of 12.06 meters and 10.76 meters, respectively.

Maximilien claimed victory in the finals of the 200-meter dash by crossing the finish line in 24.55 seconds, which earned 10 points for the Bears.  The sophomore also earned second place in the 400-meter dash with a time of 54.57 seconds.

Meanwhile, Joseph and Shavonne Husbands posted strong performances in the 60-meter dash. Joseph earned the silver in the 60-meter dash (7.54 seconds), while Husbands matched a personal best in 7.68 seconds, good for sixth place.

Betsy Borgsmiller and Jordan Bond earned personal bests in the high jump. Borgsmiller, a freshman from Sikeston, Mo., placed fifth with a distance of 1.70 meters. Bond narrowly beat her previous best with an identical distance of 1.70 meters.

Wichita State won the indoor title with 147 points. Indiana State (138 points) was second, followed by Illinois State (122), Missouri State (88), Southern Illinois (77), Northern Iowa (41), Bradley (25) and Drake (24).

Next up for the Bears is the Arkansas Last Chance Meet on March 1 in Fayetteville, Ark. The event is the final competition before the NCAA Indoor Championships, and is for competitors who want to improve their national marks in advance of the accepted entries list.

The NCAA Indoor Championships will also be held in Fayetteville on March 8-9.
