WICHITA, Kan. -- The Missouri State track and field squad wrapped up competition on Saturday (Feb. 2) at the Varsity Apartments Invitational with more than a dozen personal best times and impressive performances from sprinters Althia Maximilien and Pernell Joseph.
Joseph and Maximilien continued to display consistency in their events, said Ronald Boyce, director of track & field and cross country. Joseph took first place in the 60-meter dash preliminary round with a time of 7.55 seconds, while Maximilien was the runner-up in the 200-meter dash in 24.66 seconds. Both times were Missouri Valley Conference bests this weekend.
Other MSU highlights came from Maximilien, who posted a personal-best time (7.78) in the 60-meter dash. Meanwhile, four freshmen sprinters established new best marks in the 200-meter dash. Oarabile Babolayi (25.94), Chelsie Horton (26.41), Holly Pattie-Belleli (26.49) and Josie Dyke (27.19) all set the bar for future performances in that event.
Additionally, freshman Tenaly Smith smashed her previous best time in the 800-meter run by crossing the finish line in 2:18.47, more than 10 seconds better than the previous mark she set at the Missouri Invitational on Jan. 18.
Freshmen Mackenzie Weis and Olivia Francka made their Missouri State debuts on Saturday. Weis was 20th in the 3,000-meter run (11:13.48), while Francka ran the mile in 5:54.31.
Missouri State will prepare for its next meet, the Tyson Invitational in Fayetteville, Ark. on Feb. 8-9. The two-day event is slated to begin at noon on Friday and Saturday.
