Track & Field Bears Open with Eight Personal Bests in Wichita

WICHITA, Kan. - The Missouri State track & field team opened the Varsity Apartments Invitational with eight personal bests at the Heskett Center Friday.
The Bears sit sixth in the team standings through the first of the two-day competition with five points. Host Wichita State leads with 48 points followed by Stephen F. Austin (36).
Four Missouri State student-athletes, senior Pernell Joseph (7.61), junior Chelsey Borders (7.64), sophomore Shavonne Husbands (7.81) and junior Althia Maximilien (7.88), qualified for the 60-meter dash finals. Joseph took the top spot in the event, while Borders posted a personal best.
Sophomore Robiann Broomfield took fifth in the long jump with a leap of 5.38 meters (17 feet, eight inches), leading a group of three Bears in the event. Me'Kayla Canady-McGee was 12th (4.83 meters) and Betsy Borgsmiller was 15th (4.67 meters). Junior Haley Scott won the pentathlon high jump with a personal-best mark of 1.70 meters (five feet, seven inches) and was the Bears' only event winner on the day.
Scott also turned in a personal best in the pentathlon long jump with an effort of 5.29 meters (17 feet, 4.25 inches) to place fourth in that event.
Senior Gemma Smith (10.89 meters) and freshman Kirstie Leslie (8.62 meters) each put up personal bests in the pentathlon shot put to finish second and 14th, respectively.
Scott (3,291), Smith (3,229) and Holly Pattie-Belleli (3,192) were sixth, seventh and eighth, respectively in the pentathlon standings for the Bears.
The second day of competition begins at 10 a.m., Saturday.
