Missouri State Softball Announces 2010 Schedule

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- The Missouri State softball team will square off against five postseason qualifiers from 2009 and participate in four early-season tournaments as part of its 54-game 2010 schedule. The Bears will host 21 home games on 14 dates at Killian Softball Stadium, opening the home slate with a doubleheader against IUPUI on March 17, after playing their first 19 contests on the road.

Missouri State will play a total of nine games against NCAA Tournament participants, including home dates with Oklahoma State (March 25), Bradley (April 10-11), Tulsa (April 21) and Arkansas (April 28).

The Bears will kick off the campaign on Feb. 12 against Marshall in the first of five games at the Stetson Lead-Off Classic in DeLand, Fla., where MSU will also battle Michigan State and host Stetson. The Bears will be back in action the following weekend (Feb. 19-21), in Denton, Texas, as part of a Sleep Inn Classic field that includes Colorado State, North Texas, Buffalo, Arkansas and Sam Houston State.

After a week off, the Bears head north to Columbia, where they will square off against the state of Missouri's other four Division I programs at the Missouri Breast Cancer Tournament at University Field. Highlighting the weekend will be MSU's tourney opener against defending Big 12 champion and College World Series participant Missouri on March 6.

Missouri State will wrap up regular-season tournament play the weekend of March 12-13, at the Kansas Invitational in Lawrence, Kan. The Bears will play two-game sets against both Valparaiso and host Kansas at Arrocha Ballpark.

A busy nine-day stretch awaits the Bears as they open the home portion of the schedule. Missouri State will play nine games over that span (including eight at Killian), beginning with doubleheaders against IUPUI (March 17) and Rutgers (March 18), before opening Missouri Valley Conference play with a three-game series against Southern Illinois (March 20-21). MSU travel to Wichita State (March 24) for a midweek match-up against the Shockers, then returns home the next evening for a non-conference date with Oklahoma State.

Missouri State will hit the road for a seven-game stretch that will include conference trips to Evansville (March 27-28) and Creighton (April 2-3), sandwiching the Bears' return trip to Stillwater, Okla., as part of a home-and-home series with Oklahoma State (March 30).

The Bears return to Killian for the first of seven April home dates, opening a three-game series against 2009 MVC champion Bradley on April 10. Missouri State will also host Wichita State (April 14), Tulsa (April 21), Illinois State (April 24-25) and Arkansas (April 28), and travel to Drake (April 17-18) to close the month. MSU will wrap up the regular season by hosting Indiana State (May 1-2) and traveling to UNI (May 8-9).

The State Farm MVC Softball Championship will be hosted by Drake University and run from May 13-15, at Buel Field in Des Moines, Iowa.

Missouri State, which went 19-25 and finished seventh in the MVC in 2009, will begin its 42nd season of varsity softball in 2010 with an overall record of 928-762-2. Holly Hesse enters her 22nd season as head coach of the Bears with a career mark of 548-526-2.
