Bears Open Fall Season with a Pair of Victories
The Missouri State softball team kicked off its 2008 fall campaign with wins over Jefferson College and Evangel this past Saturday (Sept. 20) at MSU Softball Field. The Bears got solid pitching from Lauren Supak, who struck out seven batters in five innings of work, to hold off Jeff Co., 4-3, for their first win of the day, then used a six-run fourth inning to run away with a 9-2 decision in the nightcap versus Evangel.
Supak yielded only four hits and a first-inning run to earn the victory against the Vikings, while Elysha Swider, Jessie Smith and Brooke Kempker delivered RBI singles in a three-run third inning that proved to be the difference. Kempker reached base in each of her three place appearances, stole a base and scored a run to lead the Bears' offensive attack.
In game two, MSU scored in four of the first five innings, and Smith's three-run double capped the Bears' six-run fourth that turned a two-run game into an 8-0 laugher. Smith went 2-for-3 and drove in four runs to conclude the afternoon with three hits and five RBIs.
Lauren McGinley, who had a two-run single to start MSU's decisive fourth-inning rally, also turned in a strong mound effort for the Bears, allowing just two runs on five hits in five innings of work. Freshman Natalie Rose worked two perfect innings to close out the victory.
The Bears will be right back in action Monday (Sept. 22) afternoon when they host Crowder at 3 p.m., and Drury at 7 p.m., at MSU Softball Field.
