Softball Bears Set to Open Fall Campaign
The Missouri State softball team will get its 2008 fall season underway this weekend with the Maroon and White Game and the first two contests of an eight-game slate as part of the Missouri State Fall Invitational at MSU Softball Field.
The Bears’ annual Maroon and White scrimmage will begin at 11 a.m. Saturday (Sept. 13) to open the weekend’s festivities. Three teams will take part in round-robin play on Sunday (Sept. 14) as part of the Fall Invite, beginning with MSU’s 1 p.m. contest against Crowder. The Bears will also square off against Drury in the 5 p.m. nightcap following the 3 p.m. game featuring Crowder and Drury.
This weekend’s action will be the first of three straight September weekends on which Missouri State will host competition. The Bears will take on Jefferson College (1 p.m.) and Evangel (5 p.m.) the following Saturday (Sept. 20), then welcome back some familiar faces for the annual MSU Alumni Game on Sunday, September 21 at 12 p.m. On September 27, The Bears will host their final games of the fall as part of the Missouri State Fall Festival. MSU will battle Central Missouri at 1 p.m. and Missouri S&T at 5 p.m.
To conclude the fall season, the Bears will travel to Dupo, Ill., to take part in the Diamond Sports Fall Tournament, where they will match up against Saint Louis (1:45 p.m.) and Southeast Missouri State (3:30 p.m.) on October 4.
Entering her 21st season at the helm of the Missouri State softball program, head coach Holly Hesse returns 12 letterwinners, including All-MVC outfielder Brooke Kempker, from last year’s 28-22 squad. The 2008 Bears fell just one game shy of capturing the school’s sixth Missouri Valley Conference Tournament title.
