Missouri State to Host 2011 MVC Softball Championship
SPRINGFIELD -- The Missouri Valley Conference’s post-season softball tournament will return to Springfield for the first time in 17 years next spring, as Missouri State University has been selected to host the 2011 State Farm MVC Softball Championship. As the host institution, MSU is guaranteed a spot in the tournament, which will take place May 12-14, at Killian Softball Stadium.
Commissioner Doug Elgin announced the complete list of dates and sites for the various Missouri Valley Conference sports championships for the 2010-11 athletic season. Notably, that includes a recommendation from the league’s Joint Committee (faculty athletics representatives, directors of athletics and senior woman administrators of each institution) to bring the 2010 State Farm MVC Women’s Soccer Championship to Omaha, Neb., the 2010 State Farm MVC Men’s Soccer Championship to Peoria, Ill.; the 2010 State Farm MVC Volleyball Championship to Cedar Falls, Iowa; the 2011 State Farm MVC Men’s Golf Championship to the Lake of the Ozarks, Mo.; the 2011 State Farm MVC Men’s and Women’s Tennis Team Championship to St. Louis; the 2011 State Farm MVC Softball Championship to Springfield, Mo.; and the 2011 State Farm Baseball Championship to Omaha, Neb.
The site awards are subject to ratification at the Missouri Valley Conference Presidents’ Council meeting, which takes place June 4. Eight of the league’s 10 league schools are set to host one or more championships in 2010-11.
WOMEN’S SOCCER: The 2010 State Farm MVC Women’s Soccer Tournament will be at Omaha, Neb., and Creighton hosts the tournament at the Michael G. Morrison, S.J., Stadium, on Nov. 5-7. It marks the third-straight year that Creighton has hosted the women’s championship. The top six teams (of seven) advance to the championship, and the top two seeds receive a bye in the first round. First-round games are on campus sites - Sunday, Oct. 31. The semifinals are Friday, Nov. 5, and the championship is Sunday, Nov. 7. The winner of the tournament receives an automatic bid to the 2010 NCAA Women’s Soccer Championship. Last year in Omaha, Neb., Illinois State won the league tournament title.
MEN’S SOCCER: The 2010 State Farm MVC Men’s Soccer Tournament will be in Peoria, Ill., and will be played at Shea Stadium on Nov. 10-12-14. The tournament is a Wednesday-Friday-Sunday format, with six (of eight) teams advancing to the championship. The opening round will be played Wednesday, the semifinals on Friday, and the championship match on Sunday, Nov. 14. The winner of the tournament receives an automatic bid to the 2010 NCAA Men’s Soccer Championship. In 2009, Drake and Missouri State represented The Valley in the NCAA Tournament, while the Bulldogs won the league’s automatic berth with a 2-1 victory over Evansville. The 2010 season marks the first year that affiliate members Central Arkansas and Southern Illinois Edwardsville will be eligible for the league title.
VOLLEYBALL: The 2010 State Farm Missouri Valley Conference volleyball championship is in Cedar Falls, Iowa, at McLeod Center. UNI is the host. The tournament will be held on Thanksgiving weekend, with the winner receiving an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. Last year, UNI and Wichita State were selected for the 64-team NCAA Tournament field, and both won their first-round matches. UNI last hosted the State Farm MVC Volleyball Championship in 2005, and the Panthers have never hosted in McLeod, which will have a new wooden floor installed for 2010. The Panthers have been among the league’s best for average attendance in recent seasons, averaging 1,667 fans over the last five years.
MEN’S GOLF: The 2011 State Farm MVC Men’s Golf Championship is at the Lake of the Ozarks, Mo., at the Club at Porto Cima, April 25-26. Missouri State is the host. The Club at Porto Cima is ranked as the No. 3 course in the state of Missouri and has been ranked in the Top 10 since opening in July 2000. The 2010 State Farm MVC Men’s Golf Tournament champion was Wichita State, and the Shockers represented the league in the NCAA Regional.
SOFTBALL: The 2011 State Farm MVC Softball Championship will be hosted by Missouri State. The tournament will be played May 12-14 at the Killian Sports Complex. Missouri State, as host institution, receives one of the tournament spots in the three-day tournament. The champion of the tournament, which was awarded on a bid basis, receives an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. Missouri State last hosted the championship in 1994. This past year, in Des Moines, Iowa, Creighton beat Southern Illinois in the title game of the State Farm MVC Tournament. The Bluejays were joined by at-large representative Illinois State in the NCAA Tournament field. Notably, only one team (Bradley in 2009) in the 28-year history of the softball tournament has won the title as the host.
BASEBALL: The 2011 State Farm MVC Baseball Championship will be played in the newly constructed TD AMERITRADE Park Omaha. Creighton will host the tournament, which will be played May 24-28. Since 1987, the tournament has been played at Wichita State every season except four [Springfield, Ill. (1995); Evansville, Ind. (1998); and Springfield, Mo. (2004 and 2007)]. The champion of the tournament, which was awarded on a bid basis, receives an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. TD AMERITRADE Park Omaha will have a seating capacity of 24,000 and is scheduled to open next April. It is the future home of the NCAA College World Series. The 2010 State Farm MVC Baseball Championship begins Tuesday, April 25, and features all eight teams. Wichita State is the host and top seed for this year’s championship, while co-champ Illinois State is the No. 2 seed.
TENNIS: The 2011 State Farm MVC Men’s and Women’s Tennis Championship will move to a neutral site as it will be played in St. Louis at the Dwight Davis Tennis Center and Sunset Tennis Center on April 29-May 1. Southern Illinois will serve as host. The Dwight Davis Tennis Center has 18 lighted outdoor courts and is home to the St. Louis Aces professional tennis team. The Sunset Tennis Center has eight indoor hard courts and was the site of the 2007 NCAA Division III National Championship. In addition to the men’s and women’s basketball tournaments and the men’s golf championship, next year’s co-ed team championship will be the only MVC Tournament hosted on a neutral site.
In addition to the recommendation of the championship sites up for bid, the Joint Committee reaffirmed the following pre-assigned sites for 2010-11:
The State Farm MVC Men’s Basketball Championship -- the 21st consecutive men’s tournament in St. Louis -- will feature all 10 Missouri Valley Conference schools and will be played at Scottrade Center. For the sixth-straight year, the tournament will begin on Thursday and end on Sunday (March 3-6).
The State Farm MVC Women’s Basketball Championship -- the fourth consecutive women’s tournament in St. Charles -- will feature all 10 Missouri Valley Conference schools and will be played at The Family Arena. The tournament will begin on Thursday and end on Sunday (March 10-13) with the semifinals and finals on Fox Sports Midwest.
