Carr Receives Missouri Valley Conference Good Neighbor Award

ST. LOUIS -- Missouri State softball player Jen Carr has been selected as one of 10 recipients of the Missouri Valley Conference’s Good Neighbor Award, the league announced Thursday. The MVC has partnered with State Farm Insurance in creating the award, which honors model student-athletes who demonstrate good citizenship.

Nine additional student-athletes were named by Commissioner Doug Elgin as the honorees for this spring, including Adam Kimble of Bradley, Michael Elson of Creighton, Chelsea Smith of Drake, Lissa Fehlman of Evansville, Mike Stalowy of Illinois State, Breanne Smith of Indiana State, Kelly Papesh of UNI, Katie Schmidt of Southern Illinois and Torrie Browning of Wichita State.

In order to be eligible for the award, the student-athlete must be in good academic standing, must demonstrate good citizenship through good sportsmanship and significant community service, and must participate in a sport, during the season of recognition.

A senior catcher from Lomita, Calif., Carr has been active in the community throughout her four seasons as a Bear. Additionally, she has been named to the Missouri State Dean’s List six times and the year-end MVC Honor Roll on three occasions. This season, she posted career highs in nearly every offensive category and her three homers was tied for third on the club. Carr joins fellow MSU standouts David Arkin (fall) and Roxy Stiles (winter) as 2008-09 recipients of the Valley honor.

“Jen is one of those people who possesses natural leadership abilities,” MSU head coach Holly Hesse says. “She’s played a position (catcher) that requires a great deal of leadership and she’s done a great job in that role for four years. She’s been a great leader in our program, both on and off the field throughout her career and we’re thrilled for her.”

Carr will graduate from Missouri State Friday with her bachelor’s degree in political science and then attend law school in southern California.
