Smith tabbed MVC Co-Player of the Week
Missouri State softball player Jessie Smith has been honored as the Missouri Valley Conference Co-Player of the Week, announced by the conference Monday. The sophomore shortstop was nearly impossible to get out during last weekend’s three-game series with Drake. Smith was 6-for-10 and hit for the cycle during the weekend with three singles, a double, triple, and home run as Missouri State dropped two of three against the Bulldogs. Smith shared the award with Illinois State’s Amber Smith.
Smith stole her MVC-leading 16th base of the season in game two of the Saturday doubleheader. The Blue Springs, Mo., native posted impressive 1.200 slugging and .615 on-base percentages during the weekend. Smith improved her batting average 24 percentage points during the weekend, to .295, and took the team lead in RBIs (24), home runs (7), triples (3), and total bases (76).
Her home run in Sunday’s game moved her into fifth place on Missouri State’s career homers list, with 15. In the field, Smith was a perfect 12-for-12 in fielding chances and improved her fielding percentage to an impressive .980 for the season.
The Bears will wrap up the regular season with a three-game series at nationally-ranked Illinois State this weekend. The teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday, May 5, and a single game Sunday, with both days starting at 12 noon.
