Softball Bears lose 4-3 to Southern Illinois
Melissa Porche joined the 700 strike out club in Missouri State’s 4-3 loss to Southern Illinois, Sunday at MSU Softball Field. The loss drops the softball Bears to 24-17 overall and 11-10 in Missouri Valley Conference action.
Porche (15-11) recorded her 700th career strike out in the fourth against SIU’s Katie Schmidt and finished with nine for the game. Her 703 career strikeouts ranks ninth on the Valley’s all-time list and is the second most in MSU history.
She allowed seven hits in her 21st complete game of the season.
SIU jumped out to an early 2-0 lead on Tiffanie Dismore’s two-out single to left in the second. Porche helped her own cause in the bottom half of the inning, leading off with her fourth home run of the seaon to right field. Freshman Ashley Knehans followed three batters later with a two-out single to left, scoring junior Jana Shewmaker from second to tie the game at 2-2.
Porche singled to left to start the Bears’ fourth. Junior Brooke Kempker’s bunt single advanced Porche to second and both runners moved up a base on Shewmaker’s ground out to first. Porche scored on a wild pitch by SIU starter Nikki Waters to give the Bears a 3-2 lead but relief pitcher Daniel Glossen silenced the MSU threat, striking out freshman Jenna Schwark with Bears on second and third to end the inning.
SIU responded with two runs in the fifth to account for the final margin. The Salukis plated two runs in the frame on three hits.
MSU will host Arkansas in its final home date of the season, Tuesday (April 29). The first game of the scheduled doubleheader will begin at 3 p.m.
