Creighton completes MVC sweep of softball Bears

For the second day in a row, Creighton freshman Tara Oltman outdueled Missouri State junior Melissa Porche in extra innings and the Bluejays came away with a 2-0 Missouri Valley Conference win over the softball Bears in nine frames Sunday at the MSU softball field to complete a three-game weekend sweep of the Bears.

In a game that was almost a carbon copy of the first game of Saturday’s doubleheader when Oltman beat Porche 1-0 on a ninth-inning home run, the teams traded zeroes Sunday until the visiting Bluejays plated two unearned runs in the top of the ninth. Jessica German led off the inning with a double to the base of the wall in left and, one out later, advanced to third when Michelle Koch reached on a dropped fly by Bears’ rightfielder Brooke Kempker. Jessica Wakasugi walked and Jamie Reiss rolled a single between the Bears’ drawn-in left-side infielders to score German. Caitlin Marcano got the second run home with a long foul sacrifice fly to left.

The result left Creighton 17-5 overall to go with their 3-0 league mark while the Bears fell to 11-15 and 0-3. Oltman got her second win in two days to raise her mark to 10-2 for the year as she struck out 10 and allowed just four hits in the game. For the second straight day, Porche got only a loss for her complete-game effort as she slipped to 7-8 for the season.

Porche worked out of jams all day as Creighton stranded 11 runners in the contest. The Bears left seven runners on base with their best scoring chance coming when the first two hitters singled in the bottom of the third but Oltman got a strikeout, a groundout and a popout to end the frame. Katie Martin singled for the Bears to lead off the sixth but was stranded at second. Martin reached again on a one-out single in the eighth but stalled at third. The Bears got their leadoff runner on base with an error in the last of the ninth but couldn’t take advantage of the miscue.

Missouri State hits the road for five Valley contests this week. The Bears are at Wichita State for a 1 p.m. doubleheader Wednesday and then play a three-game series at Bradley next Saturday and Sunday.
