Chelsea Jones Named MVC Pitcher of the Week Again
March 17, 2014
ST. LOUIS, Mo. - Junior Chelsea Jones has earned her second Missouri Valley Conference Pitcher of the Week distinction the league office announced Monday (March 17). Jones was also named MVC Pitcher of the Week earlier this season on March 3.
The El Reno, Okla., native went 3-0 last week with a team-best 1.66 ERA while holding opposing batters to a .191 average. She now leads the team with seven victories on the year, one shy of the MVC leaders.
In Tuesday's win, Jones pitched 3.2 solid innings of relief allowing just two hits to Central Arkansas. Jones followed that up with four more stellar innings of scoreless relief on Thursday holding SIUE to just two hits and helping her own cause with a walk-off double.
She earned her third win of the week in game one against Bradley with five good innings against the Braves. She allowed just five hits and one earned run to get MSU off to a good start in conference play. Jones did not walk a batter in the start against Bradley, the seventh time in nine starts without allowing a walk.
Jones' outstanding week lowered her season ERA to 2.94, sixth-best among MVC hurlers, and she leads all MVC pitchers with just 0.79 walks allowed per game.
The Bears will play Northern Colorado on Tuesday (March 18) at 5:00 p.m. game at Killian Stadium. MSU and UNC have only played twice since facing each other in the AIAW national tournament three straight years from 1972-1974. This year marks the 40th anniversary of the 1974 National Championship in which the Bears defeated Northern Colorado 14-7 in the title game.
