MSU's Porche named MVC Pitcher of the Week
After helping the Missouri State softball team go 3-1 last week, senior Melissa Porche has been named Missouri Valley Conference Pitcher of the Week, the league office announced Monday (March 17).
A Buena Park, Calif., native, Porche appeared in each of the Bears’ four games, going 1-1 with her MVC-leading fourth and fifth saves of the season in 16 1/3 innings of work. Porche earned the victory in MSU’s 14-2 win over Saint Louis (March 12), working four innings and allowing just two hits and one earned run. She came back to save the nightcap of the twinbill, recording 2 2/3 innings of two-hit relief to close out the 4-1 MSU victory.
Porche started Friday’s (March 14) conference opener against Indiana State, turning in a complete-game effort in the Bears’ 1-0 loss. She bounced back to save a 2-1 decision for MSU in the second game of the doubleheader, closing the door on the Sycamores by registering the final seven outs of the game.
In all, Porche struck out 17 batters, allowed 10 hits and just two earned runs to lower her conference-leading ERA to 0.89.
This marks the second time in Porche’s MSU career that she has been named MVC Pitcher of the Week, also nabbing the award last April in the midst of a 16-19 campaign.
The Bears return to action Tuesday (March 18) with a 3 p.m. doubleheader at Oklahoma State.
