Missouri State Softball Cancels Thursday's Home Opener
Feb. 26, 2013
SPRINGFIELD, Mo. - The Missouri State softball team (7-8) will have to wait to open its home slate as head coach Holly Hesse announced that the home opener scheduled for Thursday against Wright State has been cancelled due to field conditions and cold weather. Attempts to reschedule the game with the Raiders are on-going. The next Missouri State home softball game is scheduled for Saturday, March 16, when the Bears open conference play with a noon doubleheader against UNI.
The Bears completed a second-straight winning road tournament going 3-2 at the Frost Classic in Chattanooga, Tenn., last weekend. MSU pitcher Chelsea Jones racked up her seventh-consecutive win in an 8-0 blanking of host Chattanooga on Sunday. She leads all Valley pitchers with seven victories, nine complete games, 65 innings pitched and 114 induced ground ball outs.
Senior first baseman Stevie Pierce launched her league-leading sixth home run of the season. She also leads the Valley in runs batted in (21), total bases (38) and two-out RBI (11). Already this season, Pierce has set career highs in home runs, RBI, total bases and runs scored (16).
Missouri State will continue what is now a 22-game season opening road trip when the Bears head to Cape Girardeau, Mo., for the annual Missouri Coaches vs. Cancer Tournament hosted by SEMO this weekend. MSU will play Saint Louis and #6 Missouri on Saturday. Then on Sunday, the Bears will face UMKC and host-SEMO.
