Valley Names Natalie Rose Pitcher of the Week
Feb. 20, 2012
Missouri State softball hurler Natalie Rose was named Missouri Valley Conference Pitcher of the Week, the league office announced Monday. Rose, a senior from Henryetta, Okla., was tremendous in her three outings this weekend, picking up a win and a save to help the Bears to a 2-1 record to begin the season. It is Rose's third career MVC Pitcher of the Week award; she won the honor twice last March (3/14/11 and 3/28/11).
For the weekend, Rose struck out 19 batters while not issuing a single base on balls in 15 innings of work. On Sunday, she took a perfect game into the sixth inning before surrendering three hits to the Jackrabbits in the final two innings. She struck out 11 SDSU batters en route to the complete game victory.
On Friday, Rose picked up the save after firing three scoreless innings of relief and striking out three Sam Houston State batters. Despite a no-decision, Rose continued her domination of the Mean Green by shutting down the UNT offense over the final five innings. Including Friday's outing, she has tossed 15 innings against UNT allowing just one run while striking out 14 Mean Green hitters in her last three appearances at North Texas.
"Nat(alie) was spectacular both in relief and as a starter for us this weekend," said head coach Holly Hesse. "Her 19 strikeouts without allowing a walk is a phenomenal stat line for the first week of the season. The no-hitter she took into the sixth inning against South Dakota State was indicative of how she pitched all weekend."
Rose was a preseason All-MVC selection this year and was MVC Tournament MVP last spring. She hurled the 13th no-hitter in Missouri State history on May 7, 2011, versus Evansville and earned All-MVC first team honors following the 2011 season. Rose set single-season school records with 39 starts, 49 appearances and 265.1 innings tossed in 2011.
Missouri State will travel to Memphis, Tenn. this week for the Blues City Classic. The Bears will open the weekend against Northern Iowa in a non-conference matchup at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, February 24. Play will continue on Saturday when MSU faces Miami (Ohio) at 9:00 a.m. and SEMO at 8:00 p.m. The Bears round out the Blues City Classic on Sunday versus Western Illinois (11:00 a.m.) and host Memphis (1:00 p.m.).
