2014 Missouri State Softball Season Preview: Outfielders
Feb. 5, 2014
As the Missouri State softball team prepares for Saturday's regular season opener at Georgia Tech, we take a look at this year's team in a four-part season preview. Today's focus is the outfield.
The Bears have a plethora of options in the outfield. One of the keys will be senior centerfielder Kerri Cunningham. The speedy lefty hitter will likely resume the role of leadoff hitter. Cunningham led MSU with three triples in 2013 and set career highs with 32 hits, 20 runs scored and seven RBI.
The loss of seniors at the corner outfield positions opens up opportunities for a number of players to step up.
Juniors Rebecca McPherson and Ali Trickey will vie for starts in left field with freshman Madison Jones pushing for playing time. Pitcher Chelsea Jones could play right field when not in the circle. Suzanne Allen, Ciara Flau and newcomer Allie Alvstad will also compete for the right field spot.
"There is a lot of good competition going on in the outfield," stated Hesse. "We definitely see Kerri as the starter in center. She has great aggressiveness, a lot of speed and a strong arm. A lot will depend on who is hitting the ball."
