Bears Knock Out Bradley, 4-1, in the First Round of the MVC Tournament
May 10, 2012
The Missouri State softball team (25-25, 12-14) extended it MVC Tournament winning streak to five games with a 4-1 win over Bradley (21-30, 11-15) in the first round of the State Farm MVC Tournament in Carbondale, Ill., on Thursday afternoon. The Bears recorded the 68th win in Tournament history, by far the most of any program, and beat the Braves in the opening round of the tournament for the second-straight year.
Pitcher Natalie Rose fired her 24th complete game of the season and came within one out of another shutout. She struck out eight Braves hitters while issuing a pair of walks to move to 17-15 this season.
Chelsea Jones had a pair of singles to lead the Bears. Six of the nine starting hitters in the MSU lineup registered a hit in the game.
Missouri State wasted little time jumping in front in its half of the first inning. Ashley Brentz lined a shot towards third that glanced off the diving third baseman's glove for an infield single. After advancing on a wild pitch, Brentz moved to third on a sharp single up the middle. Pinch runner Ciara Flau moved up to second on another wild pitch, putting two runners in scoring position. Heather Duckworth grounded to second, but a wide throw allowed both runners to score. A Stacia Boeckstiegel groundout moved Duckworth into scoring position and she scored on a Lauren Eisenreich single up the middle.
The Bears added to the lead in the second. Chelsea Jones laced a single through the left side to lead off the inning. Pinch runner Ali Trickey advanced to second on Raeven Replogle's 16th sacrifice bunt of the season. After Trickey stole third base, Kirstin Cutter walked giving the Bears runners at the corners. Cutter stole second and an errant throw allowed Trickey to cross the plate for the Bears' fourth run of the game.
Bradley looked to get back in the game in the top of the third. The leadoff hitter sent a deep drive to left center, but Replogle tracked it down with a nice over the shoulder catch on the warning track.
Missouri State got a runner on in the third, the fourth and again in the sixth. Rebecca McPherson lined a two-out single through the left side, but was stranded in the third. Cutter reached on a one-out infield single in the fourth, but was stuck at second when the inning ended. Jones singled to left in the sixth and was left standing atsecond to end the inning.
The sixth-seeded Bears will play third-seeded Drake (28-27, 17-10) at 6:35 p.m. at Charlotte West Stadium in Carbondale, Ill. MSU defeated the Bulldogs in last season's MVC Tournament title game, 7-4.
