CEDAR FALLS, Iowa - The Missouri State softball team (23-20, 6-11) dropped a doubleheader at UNI (24-14, 11-7) in Cedar Falls, Iowa, on Friday afternoon, 10-0 and 9-1, both in five innings.

Senior Ashley Brentz had two hits, drew a walk and scored a run for the Bears on Friday. She upped her batting average to .331 to tie for the best on the team. The walk was the 73rd of her career, moving her within three of the top-five in MSU history.

Redshirt sophomore Erin Duewel recorded two hits in game one, her third multi-hit game of the season. Bethany Sullinger added a hit and an RBI and Heather Duckworth accounted for the other Bears' hit.

Game 1 - Missouri State 0, UNI 10 (5)
The Panthers put up four early runs as each of the first four batters reached and crossed the plate. MSU starter Jessie Van Es settled in and allowed just one more hit in the inning and picked up her first strikeout to end the frame.

MSU got a two-out single to left by Erin Duewel in the second inning. She remained at first as the inning closed.

UNI repeated its run output in the second inning as Panther Rikki Alcarez hit her second three-run home run of the game.

The Bears got a rally going in the top of the third. Rebecca McPherson was plunked to begin the inning. Ali Trickey put down a nice sacrifice bunt, but the throw went wide allowing Trickey to reach and McPherson to advance to third. Brentz followed and put down a sacrifice bunt to move Trickey into scoring position. Chelsea Jones also dropped down a bunt, but the throw home beat McPherson according to the home plate umpire.

 

 

After UNI added a run in the bottom of the third, MSU got back to work. Bethany Sullinger singled to center to start in top of the fourth. Two batters later, Duewel reached on an infield single, her second hit of the game. An infield fly and ground out stranded both runners.

Game 2 - Missouri State 1, UNI 9 (5)
The Bears started game two with a walk by Brentz, her 22nd free pass of the season. After a fielder's choice, Heather Duckworth drew the second walk of the inning. UNI got out of the jam stranding both runners.

In the bottom of the first, UNI put a four-spot on the board on a walk, two fielder's choices and a grand slam. Braxton Coil walked in the second inning, but Bears were not able to get a run across.

Brentz led off the Bears' third inning with a single to right field. Chelsea Jones reached on a fielding error by the UNI pitcher, who bobbled and then kicked the sacrifice bunt attempt. Duckworth continued the inning with a single to left to load the bases. Sullinger grounded out to second, pushing home the first run for MSU. The Panthers pieced together a walk and two hits to get the run back in the bottom of the third.

McPherson reached on a fielding error to begin the fourth. She stole second and with two outs, Brentz singled to right. The throw home was in time to cut down McPherson and end the inning.

UNI added three runs in the fourth and another in the fifth inning for the 9-1 win.

The Bears and Panthers wrap up the series on Saturday at 12:00 p.m. Missouri State returns to Killian Stadium on Tuesday, April 22 for a 3:00 p.m. doubleheader against Wichita State.
