Jones Tosses Three-Hit Shutout of SDSU in Semifinals
Feb. 15, 2014
ARLINGTON, Texas - The Missouri State softball team (5-2) advanced to the UTA Maverick Invitational Championship Game behind the arm and bat of Chelsea Jones with a 2-0 win over South Dakota State on Saturday evening. The Bears will face host-UT Arlington (6-3) at 12:00 p.m. on Sunday.
"So excited to see all three of our pitchers throw shutouts in each of their last outings," said head coach Holly Hesse. "For Chelsea (Jones) to throw a shutout this early in the season is impressive. The left side of our infield really did a tremendous job in another perfect defense game."
Chelsea Jones pitched her fourth career shutout and allowed just three hits to the Jackracbbits. She also was the difference at the plate, driving home the game-winning run with a single in the fourth.
Bethany Sullinger continued her stellar weekend going 2-for-3 and driving in the other run in the game.
Missouri State got hits from Kerri Cunningham, Heather Duckworth and Ashley Brentz in each of the first three innings, respectively, but neither team was able to put a run on the board until the fourth.
Bethany Sullinger began the Bears' fourth inning with a rocket single into center field. Duckworth walked to push her into scoring position. Ali Trickey followed and reached on a fielder's choice giving MSU runners at first and second. Chelsea Jones looped a single over third base plating Duckworth to give the Bears the lead.
In the fifth inning, Stacia Boeckstiegel reached on a SDSU error with two outs. Sullinger made it hurt with an RBI double to left-center as Boeckstiegel slid in safely at home to push the lead to 2-0.
The weekend concludes on Sunday with the Bears either playing in a 10:00 a.m. consolation game or the 12:00 p.m. championship game. Missouri State travels to Memphis next weekend for the Blues City Classic starting on Friday (Feb. 21). The Bears' home opener is slated for March 12 vs. SIU Edwardsville at 5:00 p.m.
