TOWSON, Md. - Missouri State women's soccer senior Michelle Sommer added another post-season award to her resume as she earned Capital One Academic All-America third team honors, the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) announced on Thursday. A midfielder from Tecumseh, Kan., she is just the second player in program history to earn the national award (Mary Litvan, 2002 and 2003).

Sommer, a cell and molecular biology major with a 3.93 GPA, continues to rake in the post-season academic honors after being named to the Capital One Academic All-District VI and Academic All-MVC first team awards earlier this month. An All-MVC first teamer this year, Sommer scored four goals in 2012, second on the team and ninth in the league. She also led the Bears in shots taken for the second-straight season. Her 39 shots this season ranked sixth in the Valley and moved her career total to 137 shots, fourth-most in program history.

In 2011, she was an All-MVC second teamer and MVC Scholar-Athlete first teamer. She was named MVC Offensive Player of the Week on September 27, 2011, after a game-winning goal and game-winning assist the prior week. Sommer earned Academic All-MVC honorable mention accolades in 2010 as well.

In her career, Sommer played in 70 matches and started every match she appeared in over the last two seasons. She totaled 10 goals and four assists including three game-winning goals. The Bears won 39 matches in her career and finished second in the MVC three times.
