Sommer, Voet Named to Capital One Academic All-District First Team
Nov. 1, 2012
SPRINGFIELD, Mo. - Missouri State women's soccer seniors Michelle Sommer and Chelsea Voet were named to the Capital One Academic All-District VI first team, CoSIDA announced on Thursday. The honor is the second for Sommer, who was a member of the second team last season, and first for Voet.
"Both of these players had tremendous impacts on our team this year," said head coach Rob Brewer. "Chelsea did a wonderful job as our only goalkeeper this season, playing every minute. Michelle has been a workhorse for us. They have been leaders on and off the field, not just academically, but in social aspects and in our volunteer efforts."
Sommer continued to be an offensive force for the Bears in her final season. For the second-straight year, she led the team in shots taken and racked up 137 shots in her career, the fourth-highest total in program history. In addition, Sommer was second on the Bears' squad with four goals this season. She was an All-MVC second team selection in 2011 and a member of the MVC Scholar-Athlete teams in each of the last two years. An MVC Offensive Player of the Week winner in 2011, Sommer completed her career with 10 goals, three game-winners, four assists and 51 starts.
Voet stepped in admirably as a first-year starter in her senior season. She tied for the regular season league lead with seven shutouts on the year. Voet was especially stout at home, allowing just two goals at home and holding a 685-consecutive minute home shutout streak during the year. After blanking Creighton this season, Voet earned MVC Goalkeeper of the Week and MVC Scholar-Athlete of the week honors on October 16 and 17, respectively.
