Women's Soccer Tops Conference Foe Creighton at Home
The Missouri State women’s soccer team defeated the Creighton Bluejays(10-5-0) 3-2 to move to 2-2 in the conference and 9-5-1 overall. The Bears jumped out to an early lead and held on for the victory despite two second-half goals.
The Bears opened the scoring 12 minutes into the game when Caroline Sweeney hit Christine Cross for the first goal of the game and her second goal of the season. Cross beat the goal keeper to the right post for the 1-0 lead. The Bears continued the scoring nine minutes before the half when Kelsey Finders fought off three Creighton defenders then beat Bluejays’ goalkeeper Kristen Casey to give the Bears the 2-0 lead.
MSU scored its third goal of the day when Allison Osmundson bounced a pass through the Bluejays’ defense to Caroline Sweeney who skipped in the goal for the 3-0 lead four and half minutes into the second half.
The Bluejays mounted a come back when the Bears defense didn’t clear a ball from in front of the net and Creighton’s Tara Bailey tapped it in to make the score 3-1 20 minutes into the second half. Creighton pulled with in one with 20 minutes left in the game when Macy Mauer slipped a pass through the Bears’ defense to Marcy Gans who beat Jackie Jasper to the post for the final score of 3-2.
Despite a late surge by the Bluejays the Bears still outshot the Bluejays 17-9 in the match. Jackie Jasper recorded six saves on the day to push her season total to 62.
The Bears will be in action on Sunday (Oct. 26) when they travel to Normal, Ill., to face Illinois State in conference play at 1 p.m.
