Missouri State's Grace Cross Named MVC Defensive Player of the Week
Oct. 18, 2011
Missouri State women's soccer player Grace Cross has been named the week's Missouri Valley Conference Defensive Player of the Week, the league announced Tuesday. The award is Cross' first career weekly honor.
Cross has been impressive for the Bears this season playing a role as a leading center back and transitioning to the midfield when needed. Her versatility was vital to the Bears' 1-1 draw at Creighton on Saturday to run the Bears' unbeaten streak to a team-record 10 matches. Cross helped the Bears back line shut down the Bluejay offense after the early goal. Her athleticism aided her in moving to the midfield position late that helped to produce the Bears' goal that tied the match late. Cross leads the team in minutes played at 1,410, has scored a game-winning goal against Illinois State and has one assist on the season.
Missouri State (10-3-2, 3-0-1) will host UNI (7-7-2, 2-2-0) for senior night on Saturday, October 22 at 7:00 p.m. at Plaster Field. It will be "Pack Plaster Pink" night as anyone wearing BearWear, pink or a soccer jersey will be admitted free in an attempt to break the all-time women's soccer attendance record. The Beartones will perform at halftime and the first 75 MSU students through the gate will receive a free t-shirt. The match will also be recorded for rebroadcast by Mediacom.
