Missouri State Downs Purple Aces, 3-1, for Conference Road Win
The Missouri State women's soccer team (6-5-2, 2-1-0) travelled to Evansville, Ind., tonight and came away with a 3-1 conference road win over the Purple Aces (5-7-0, 2-1-0).
Freshman Becky Handley scored in the third minute of play to put Missouri State up early. Fellow freshman Rachel Weimer crossed the ball to Handley, who tallied her third of the season.
Claire Hulcer would find the back of the net for her first career goal in the 53rd minute. After receiving the ball from Megan Jaskowiak, Hulcer roofed the ball over the Aces' keeper from about 15 yards out to put the Bears in front again.
Senior Samantha Aguilar added her second of the season on a header for Jessica Smits off a corner kick in the 58th minute to give Missouri State a two-goal cushion.
The Missouri State offense outshot the Purple Aces, 21-9. Hulcer led the Bears with four shots. Handley, Jaskowiak and Tara Bailes had three shots apiece for Missouri State.
Early in the second half, Evansville was awarded a penalty kick, but Missouri State goalkeeper Jessica Teahan stepped up and made the save to keep the match tied. Teahan made four saves in the win.
"The saved PK for Teahan was huge for us," said assistant head coach Josh Ganson. "That save lifted everybody up and put a fire under the whole team."
Missouri State will return home to face Drake on Sunday, October 18 for Senior Day and a 1:00 p.m. kickoff at Plaster Field.
