Missouri State Aims for 150th Women's Soccer Win on Friday
Oct. 6, 2011
The Missouri State women's soccer team (8-3-1, 2-0-0) looks to land the 150th win in team history when they take on Drake (3-5-4, 1-1-0) at Plaster Field, Friday at 7:00 p.m. The Bears are riding a five-game win streak and are unbeaten in the last seven matches, in which they have allowed just one goal against.
"We are getting good play from everyone on the field," said head coach Rob Brewer. "The team has shown the results of hard work on the defensive side of the ball and has defended well as a team. The players have done a good job of focusing and we have had players step up and play at a high level."
The Bears are looking to avenge their only regular season league loss from 2010, a 0-2 decision in Des Moines, Iowa on October 17. MSU is 2-0-1 in the last three meetings against the Bulldogs in Springfield, including a 2-0 win in 2009.
Senior goalkeeper Jessica Teahan has racked up back-to-back MVC Goalkeeper of the Week honors and has been pivotal to a Bears' defense that has shutout opponents in six of the last seven matches. Freshman defender Kelsey Fouch contributed to last Friday's shutout with a clear off the end line and was named this week's MVC Newcomer of the Week.
Freshman Bethany Smith leads the Bears offense with three goals, two game-winning goals and eight points. Junior Michelle Sommer is tops in shots (43) and shots on goal (17). The Bears have 11 different players who have scored at least one goal this season.
Entering Friday's match, Missouri State is 149-125-34 (.539) in its 16th season of play. Following the match on Friday, MSU will travel to Edwardsville, Ill., to face SIUE on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. The Bears will then head to Omaha, Neb., to face conference-rival Creighton on Saturday, October 15 at 4:30 p.m.
